Installing a font on your Windows computer is not difficult. There are two main ways to install fonts: through the Fonts menu or by dragging and dropping them into the Fonts folder. Below, you will find instructions for both methods.

OS Versions: Windows 10/8/7/Vista

Installing a Font

  • For installation, you have to first download the font from online or any other source.
  • Go to the drive where you have stored the downloaded file. The font file could be .ttf, .otf, or .fon format.
  • Right click on the font file and select the "Install" option. You can also double-click on the file to enforce the same command.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up on the installation window.
  • When the process is complete, the window will show a "Finish" button. Click on it and the installation will be done.

Drag and Drop

The second way of downloading and installing new fonts on windows computers is by dragging and dropping the font into your Fonts folder. This method is very simple and straightforward. Follow these steps below to successfully download and install a new font using this method:

  • First, navigate to where you downloaded your file (if it is in .zip format, then extract all files). Once you have found the file, right click on it and choose "extract all."
  • Make sure you extract your files into a folder that is easy to find. You can either use "My Documents" or "Desktop."
  • Once you have extracted your files to an easily accessible location, go back into that same directory by double clicking on it.
  • Click once on the font file, hold down your left mouse button and drag it to "C:\Windows\Fonts."
  • After you have dragged your font into this location release the left click of your mouse.
  • You can also copy the file and paste it into that directory.
  • If you are using Windows 10, go to the "Fonts settings" and you will see a "Drag and drop to install" option. You can drag the file from your PC and drop it into that box for easy installation.

How to Install a Font on Your Windows Computer

Installing fonts on your Mac computer is not as complicated as it may seem, but there are a few steps that need to be taken in order for the process to work. Let's see how to install a font on your Mac computer with step-by-step instructions.

OS Versions: Mac OS X 10.3 or Above

  • Once you have downloaded the font files to your computer, open up Font Book. If it's not in your Applications folder, search for "Font Book".
  • Next, click on File > Add Fonts. Now select all of the fonts you wish to install and click the Open button.
  • Then, you will be asked if you want to "Install Fonts" or "Remove Fonts" from your computer. Choose Install fonts and that is it!
  • The new fonts should now appear in your font menu at any time for use on anything from a slideshow presentation to a social media post.

OS Version: Mac OS X

  • You just need to drop the font file into the /Library/Fonts directory. It will make the font accessible to all users.
  • For a single user, drop the file into the /Users/Your_username/Library/Fonts directory.

OS Version: Mac OS 9 or Older

  • You have to convert the downloaded files to the old Mac fonts because most modern font formats don't support the Mac OS 9 and older versions.
  • Then, simply drag the file to the System folder where you will get prompts for adding it to the Fonts directory.
